my little boy, who is 4 in may, has just recently got glasses. he had to have the drops in, but soon recovered from the stinging; when i was his age i had to be pinned down by a few nurses to get the drops in my eyes, i used to crawl under the bed or desk to hide from it!
he had to wear what looked like sunglasses with one lens removed and look at simply drawn pictures. they tried to look at his eyes through the big machine but he didnt like it, the bright light really hurts when the lens isnt in the right place, his are quite badly dislocated already. because he didnt like it they made do with their hand held thing
he has 3 more appts coming up over the following weeks, one i think is to check out all his other symptoms and two are with opthamology to decide whether to remove his lenses now or wait til he is older
if your son's appt is with a child opthamologist they will know how to get the drops in, they are very well practised!

hi
my grand-daughter has these appointments every 4 months and they always do the drops. They do sting and last month we went and she wouldnt have it done. The nurse took us to one side and said there was another drop that they can put in (anaestetic) before putting in the others. Courtney is 6 so this was easy to explain and although she is not very trusting allowed this to happen. Only thing is now she will have to have both all the time!! She also has pressure test which involve a piece of equiptment that looks like a pen but has a tiny needle on the ens. She lets them do this and surprisingly it doesnt hurt. This is only done though as they are worried about glaucoma as he lens are detached slightly
At your sons age he will take it all in his stride and so long as its made fun for him he will be fine. Another small test may invole putting sticky tape over one eye at a time. The nurse told courtney she would look lioke dangermouse. However he was before her time and she wasnt too co=operative at the time but is fine now. Try practicing at home with covering one eye with an eye patch, just like a pirate! Good luck

Fraggle
Jo and darren having given you some helpful tips :)
I have been intouch with a mum , whose son had eye tests last year ( same age ) , and eye drops were used .
The link jo has posted is worth looking at as it will give you a rough idea what to expect , BUT the doctors doing the test probably see half a dozen toddlers each week , so you are in good hands xxx

Hi
I have had the test with a slit lamp to check for detached retinas etc.
They normally use eyedrops as this is an important factor in completing the rest of the test.
Not sure how they are going to go about that with a toddler/small child.
Here is a link that gives information on the slit eye lamp test and the dilation eye drops used.
http://www.allaboutvision.com/eye-exam/expect.htm#slitlamp
Hope this helps.

I used to go for eye checks at hospital as a child and they did put in drops before the test.

I don't go any more, but i have a similar test done at the opticians without drops.

Today my 15 month old had his Echo at Birmingham Childrens Hosp. It was great and all is well! The Dr did the scan herself and she had him sat on my lap and explained everything to us. Little man was fascinated by the screen! We are due back in 4 years.

At the end of the month we had the opthamology appt. Not sure what to expect. A friend has said they will put drops in... I wish them luck, LO has had sticky eyes the last few weeks and it has been a nightmare to get drops in his eyes! Anyone know what will be done??

TIA xxx
