All I can suggest is you do a lot of research on both the surgery and the surgeon. Take a look on the HMSA forums. I believe there is some topics there about this problem

Was just thinking that Pixi I just want to lead a normal life and at the moment I can't and I don't think anybody (medical people) realise how much this is affecting me. how much it is distressing me or maybe they don;t care. Trouble is I have seen two surgeons and both say nothing can be done. If I did go down that road I would have to be seen by the best there is.

Sorry you're going through it too speed, I know what you mean about older people not understanding...they do come up with some very Victorian solutions to our problems bless them, my uncle is just the same love him. I'm really emotional now, I've been crying for the last few days. Last time I hurt my foot like this and caused pain in it it improved with rest but am paranoid now that I have hurt it too soon after it being hurt the last time and made it permanently worse. Do you wear orthotics Speed? Can't remember if you told me before?

so sorry and you have my sympathy...

I have also on a number of occasions...both with private practitioners and rheumatic physios....been told exercise is the answer and it has made things worse.
I put it down to the fact that they are treating the muscles...which is what they usually treat, and do improve with exercise...
and people in general are still unfamilar with pain coming from strained connective tissue, e.g. the ligaments, tendons, and 'sheaths' to the muscles.
again, purely from my own experience of living with this for nearly 60 years, these pains improve with rest, interspersed with gentle activity where no weight , or very little, pulls on these more fragile structures.

I am having increasing trouble now with my floppy/loose ankles, for which there is no cure, only care.
I still get comments from my mother as to 'Oh I expect you were wearing poor shoes' etc.
Heavy 'sensible' shoes in fact make the problem a lot worse, as they pull on my poor ankles' connective tissue. I find soft light shoes the best, or none.

love speedwell

OK so following my last thread about my foot being severely pronated (having become so overnight so to speak around 3 years ago) I have since seen two osteopaths and a podiatrist on the NHS. Podiatrist on NHS was rubbish, first osteopath sad nothing could be done to tighten it back out and orthotics only way to go. I then saw another osteopath who said he managed to correct a child's foot with exercises once so tied them on me (think I told you about this one) an I set to work on exercises only they seem to have aggravated the condition and have caused pain in my foot (before it was just my leg). I went back to see him Thursday (the trip out exasperated the pain) and he spent on and a half hours fitting me with temporary orthotics that quite frankly I could have whipped up in ten minutes myself and charged me £75 for them. Not happy. They’re not even any good a they don’t fit in my shoes properly as there are these stuck on arch supports on them that are so huge he billow out the sides ad the back of my shoes are rubbing now and the front so tight I almost dislocated my toe. I say massive arch support but I do need loads, in fact I don’t think orthotics will help at all as I need so much to tighten my foot that if I do get my full quota of arch support my slides off to an angle (this has happened with other types of orthotics also) A the end of the day my arch has collapsed which ha caused my knee to come t of alignment and no amount of orthotics can correct that. Only exercise will work apparently...yet it’s making it worse. And now I've been charged £75 for crap basically. Just wondering what you think I should say to him? Going to ring him either today or tomorrow I feel I should know this myself but I have emotional difficulties that have been exasperated by this and other health problems besides and I feel I am at the end of my tether. Also when it comes to losing money I panic, not got much of it and it presents as security to meso if I throw away £75 it's a big deal. Anyway thanks for listening.
